What DET score equals IELTS 6.5?

A DET score of 120-125 corresponds to IELTS 6.5 in the official concordance. Many universities that ask for IELTS 6.5 accept a DET score around 120, but each school publishes its own minimum, so check your program's page.

Is this conversion official?

Yes. The table comes from Duolingo's published concordance, built from thousands of test takers who took both exams. We transcribed it as is, without rounding.

What DET score do universities usually ask for?

Most undergraduate programs ask for 100-115, and competitive or graduate programs 120-130. Requirements vary by country and school, which is exactly what our advisors help you confirm.

Does the converter use the new TOEFL 1-6 scale?

Not yet. Duolingo's concordance is published on the 0-120 iBT scale, so that is what we show. If your university lists a requirement on the new 1-6 scale, compare through the CEFR level instead.

Should I take the DET instead of IELTS?

The DET takes about an hour, you sit it at home, and results come back in about two days, while IELTS means booking a seat at a test centre and waiting longer for your score. If your target universities accept it, the DET is usually the faster route. We can help you check acceptance and prepare.

How fast are DET results, and who accepts them?

Duolingo certifies a test in about two days and lists more than 6,500 institutions that accept the score. You can send your result to as many of them as you like at no extra cost, and you do not have to pick them before you sit the test. Your programme still publishes its own minimum, so check its page.

TOEFL values use the 0-120 iBT scale from Duolingo's published concordance. ETS introduced a new 1-6 scale in January 2026, so newer TOEFL requirements may be published on that scale instead.

What each skill is worth on IELTS

Your DET report also carries a Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening subscore, each on the same 10 to 160 scale. Duolingo publishes a separate IELTS table for every skill, so the same number is not worth the same band in all four.

Duolingo prints one band for everything at 60 and below, and says the tables are least reliable below 60 and above 150. Institutions set skill minimums programme by programme, so read the requirement of the one you want.
